Government Gives More Time for ESI contribution amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Today the whole world is badly hit due to the outbreak of Coronavirus disease, also known as COVID-19. The total number of deaths due to COVID-19 around the globe has reached a terrifying stage. Many nations are now witnessing a deadlock due to the intensity of the infection.

In the wake of the peril of the pandemic of Coronavirus, the ESIC has now extended the due date for payment of the ESI contribution.

1. How much is the due date of ESI contribution payment extended?

Due to the severity of the Coronavirus disease infection, the Indian economy has been hard hit and the normal course of business has been affected.

In the wake of the COVID-19, the Director-General of the ESIC has now relaxed the norms of the ESI (General) Regulations, 1950. As a result, the ESI contribution for the month of February 2020, as well as March 2020, shall now be payable till 15th April 2020 and 15th May 2020 respectively. Here is the ESIC notification in this regard-

This is indeed a matter of relief for the entrepreneurs having ESIC registration.

2. What were the earlier due dates for ESI contribution payment?

The earlier due dates for ESI contribution payment were as below:

ESI contribution payment for the month of February 2020: 15th March 2020
ESI contribution payment for the month of March 2020: 15th April 2020

Now, the due dates for ESI contribution payment are as below:

ESI contribution payment for the month of February 2020: 15th April 2020
ESI contribution payment for the month of March 2020: 15th May 2020

3. Why are due dates for ESI contribution payment extended?

As discussed above, a sudden outbreak of Coronavirus disease and resultant deadlock has a seriously normal course of business. As a result, employers having ESIC registration are not able to timely fulfill their compliance. Hence, the due dates for ESI contribution payment have been extended for the month of February and March 2020.
