ISO Certification for Water Treatment Plants

Water is indeed the most fundamental essentiality of the mankind. Besides it is the most valuable natural resource. It is a key indispensable element component for various sustainable energy, food processing and maintaining sanitation and overall wellbeing.

Water must be considered as a global asset as well as a challenge for all. Today, the streams and rivers across national territories have become a cause of bitter conflict between various nations.

We all are well aware of the acute water scarcity on our home planet. Global statistics reveal that over 40% of the entire world population is facing this acute water shortage. Those who have adequate access to water supply, for the water contamination, continues to be a grave issue. In this regard, the water treatment plants have a pivotal role in ensuring access to clean & safe drinking water to millions. These water treatment plants need to conform to certain global benchmarks of health safety, quality, and consistency in order to maintain their presence. One of these benchmarks is ISO certification.

1. An overview of water treatment business in India

Today, the water business in India has transformed into a multibillion-dollar industry owing to the rising water scarcity and rampant contamination. Global health concerns have driven an ever-increasing number of entities into the global market with creative innovation, arrangements and quality management. Though there is no official data accessible, the industry guesstimates suggest the water business in India has reached to the tune of US$ 5 billion, or about INR 20,000 crores.

Every year, the government is spending huge bucks on watershed management through various schemes such as Namami Gange, PM Krishi Sinchayee Yojna and Neeranchal Watershed Program. These state governments entail setting up numerous water and wastewater treatment plants on a very large scale. This helps in restoring old and broken water supply lines and setting up new water supply activities to take into account the rising demand from the urban population.

2. The role of ISO certification in the water treatment business

The water business is to a great extent split among civil administrations and the government, modern and business, farming and family unit segments. The urban administration remains the most dynamic sphere where millions of rupees are being spent for expansion of water supply through different modes. As a result, many companies are now plunging into various activities such as the treatment of utilized water, or wastewater management, and water supply, which can be utilized for non-consumable purposes. Such entities are required to fulfill the global parameters for safety and quality. ISO certification is one of the fundamental requirements for an entity involved in the water treatment business to build repute before the civil administrations.

3. How does ISO certification help in effective water treatment?

The reason why much emphasis is laid on ISO certification in India for the water treatment plants is that the ISO certification gives a systematic approach for the development of quality, health safety and consistency in the clean water supply.

  • ISO standards give a synchronized technology and approach. This enables the nations in sharing of the water resources to work together economically.
  • ISO standards are made to cover almost all water-related issues, right from pipelines and irrigation to the quality, management, and sanitation of the water supplied through them.
  • ISO standards symbolize an accord on realistic and convenient solutions and suggest best practices towards sustainable water management.

4. Which ISO standards are there for efficient water treatment?

Given below are the 3 main ISO standards that are applicable for efficient water treatment activity:-

  • ISO 24516-4:2019

This benchmark was introduced recently in 2019. It gives a strategy for the efficient management of the assets related to water supply and wastewater management systems. This covers the functioning of all the wastewater treatment plants, besides the sludge treatment plants, water pumping stations, and water retention & detention amenities.

  • ISO 24511:2007

This benchmark explains the desirable activities related to drinking water and wastewater management services. It gives concrete guidelines for managing wastewater utilities as well as the inspection of wastewater services.

ISO 14001 is a management system standard that lays emphasis on the desired Environmental Management System (EMS) of an organization. It highlights the guidelines for a better environmental management system for all kinds of Organisations. In the case of Water treatment plants, the ISO 14001 is a necessary requirement to make sure that the plant has an adequate system for minimizing water contamination and wastage.

These are the main ISO standards dedicated to efficient water treatment.
