What is the procedure to add multiple business type under the same GST number?

GST registration has indeed been  seen as a remedy against all hindrances related to taxation. Though every business with the turnover exceeding INR 20 Lakhs needs to get registered under GST, the avails of voluntary GST registration procedure are infinite.

Broadly, the GST laws allow only one business registration against a GST number or GSTIN. However, the firms having branches or multiple business verticals can choose to add multiple businesses under a corresponding GST number.

No doubt, this facility is truly supportive for business expansion and diversification and is favourable for the growth of MSMEs in India. The entrepreneurs can freely expand their business over a vast region within a state with no need of a separate GST registration procedure.

How to add multiple branches of an entity under same GSTIN?

The process of inclusion of multiple business branches is quite simple. All you need to do is-

Login to the GST portal and select the option “Amendment of Registration Non - Core Fields” from the Registration tab.

Choose the option- “Additional Places of Business” from the given Non - Core Fields, as shown below.

Click Continue. On the next window, you will be supposed to specify the Goods & Services you want to add. Enter the HSN code in case of goods.

Similarly, enter the SAC code in case of services, and click Save & Continue.

Next, you’ll need to specify the total number of bank accounts held.

Next, you’ll have to enter the State Specific Information Such as Professional Tax Employee Code (EC), State Excise License No. with the person in whose name Excise License is held and Tax Registration Certificate (RC) No., as shown below-

Finally you need to authenticate the entered information by clicking on Verification checkbox and clicking on Submit with DSC button.

Your business service will be added to your GST registration account.

Evidently, there are certain criteria for adding multiple business verticals under same GSTIN.

What are scenarios where multiple multiple businesses can be added to same GSTIN?

Given below are the notable cases where adding of multiple business verticals or a different division of an enterprise is allowed:

  • The separate business verticals must exist in the same state.
  • The registered businesses included under the GST Composition Scheme are not allowed to avail such facility.
  • All those business verticals are taxable on supply of goods & services to other registered business vertical of the same category and are supposed to issue a tax invoice for their supplies.

Considering all the necessary conditions as mentioned above, an entrepreneur can easily add multiple businesses under single GST number.
