Gstr 9 and 9a Gst Return Filing Relaxations Announced

A massive relaxation for taxpayers as the government has announced a major update. As per the latest update, GSTR 9 and 9A GST Return Filing relaxations have been announced. It was done on the recommendations of 47th GST Council Meeting. The 47th GST Council meeting, held in Chandigarh on 28th and 29th June decided to exclude smaller taxpayers from the requirement of filing GST annual returns.

What is GSTR 9?

GSTR 9 is an annual return to be filed by every normal taxpayer having  Online GST Registration. This return consists of the details such as outward and inward supplies made/received during the relevant financial year under different tax heads i.e. CGST, SGST & IGST, and HSN codes.

In other words, It’s a fusion of all quarterly and monthly returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-2A, and GSTR-3B) made in that particular year. While it’s a little complicated, this form aids in the extensive data reconciliation to ensure completely transparent disclosures.

What is GSTR-9A?

GSTR-9A is an important annual return of the complete GST Return Filing procedure. It is similar to the GSTR-9. However, the only difference is taxpayers registered under composition scheme under GST have to file this. In other words, it is an annual return form for composite taxpayers of GST.

CBIC Announces GSTR 9 & 9A exemptions for small Taxpayers

In a notification, The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) following the recommendation from the GST Council, has exempted taxpayers with a turnover of up to 2 cores from the filing of annual tax returns on the forms GSTR-9 and 9A.

The notification clearly states that “ “In exercise of the powers conferred by the first proviso to section 44 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 (12 of 2017), the Commissioner, on the recommendations of the Council, hereby exempts the registered person whose aggregate turnover in the financial year 2021-22 is up to two crore rupees, from filing the annual return for the said financial year.”

The notification also mentions the applicability i.e. This notification shall come into force from the 1st day of August 2021.
