FSSAI makes Radura Mark Mandatory for Irradiated Foods

The topmost food safety regulator FSSAI has so far taken various concrete measures to ensure food safety & hygiene and in the food industry. It also conducts regular inspections of food businesses for checking whether they possess FSSAI registration or food license.

In recent times, FSSAI has implemented several measures for the regulation of the food business in the interest of public health and food safety.

In this regard, the Food Safety regulator has now notified that the food products treated with ionising radiation or irradiation should be marked as such.

In order to comprehend this issue, we must know what is all about the process of ionising radiation and which mark the consumer must look for before buying the irradiated products.

1. What is the process of irradiation?

Ionising radiation or irradiation is the process that involves exposing of the organic foods such as fruits & veggies to the ionising radiation like ultraviolet radiation, gamma rays, X-rays or electron beams to fulfil certain objectives such as-

Increasing shelf-life,
The killing of insect & pests
The killing of parasites & pathogens, and
Microbial spoilage

2. Which mark should be there on the irradiated products?

As per the FSSAI notification, all the manufacturers having FSSAI registration who deal in food products treated with irradiation must put the ‘Radura’ mark along with a tag bearing the phrase “PROCESSED BY IRRADIATION METHOD” or “treated by irradiation”. The Radura mark is shown below-
