What are the impacts of linking Aadhaar to personal info?

Indeed, an Aadhaar identification number can offer an extensive range of social security benefits that no other Id proof can do. Unquestionably, much of these perks can be availed by an ordinary citizen only by linking his 12 digit Aadhaar Unique Identification Number (UIN) with his bank account and his active mobile number. While a majority of these benefits are linked to financial assistance, others are intended towards inducing entrepreneurship and ease of doing business.

It has been recently announced by the government that the deadline for linking of the Aadhaar card with the mobile services and the bank account is to be extended from the current due date, which is 31st March.

What is the backdrop of the Aadhaar Linking?

Last year, the deadline for Aadhaar linking with the existing bank account, PAN Card and social security schemes, was extended to 31st March 2018, from the earlier 31st December 2017. Furthermore, the due date for Aadhaar linking with the mobile services and new bank accounts was also extended till 31st March.

It has now come out that the Supreme Court has decided to further adjourn the due date for Aadhaar linking ad interim, till a final verdict is passed on the same. There is no doubt that the linking of Aadhaar with the mobile services and bank accounts assists in several legal compliances for business registration such as GST registration, company incorporation, Import-Export Code Registration, MSME Registration, Trademark Registration etc.

The current decision of the Supreme Court has, for the time being, given some respite to the citizens who haven’t yet linked their Aadhaar with the aforesaid services. However, the Aadhaar linking is not mandatory for availing services, subsidies and benefits as under the Section 7 of the Aadhaar 2016.

How can Aadhaar linking make a difference?

The undermentioned advantages of the online Aadhaar linking with mobile and banking services can never be overlooked-

#1. Easy and fast track banking

Indubitably, Aadhaar based compliance can make banking all the more prompt like never before. With an interlinked Aadhaar id-proof, you need not rush to gather multiple identity proofs for completion of documentation procedure. Your Aadhaar Card is can serve as the proof of your identity as well as address proof.

#2. Easy verification of Income Tax Returns:

Gone are the days when you had to go through the tedious procedure of verification of every single document. With an Aadhaar linked PAN, tracking and verifying the ITRs can now be quite simplified a process. All you need to do is link your Aadhaar UIN on the Income Tax department government portal. You can easily verify your filed ITR using an Aadhaar generated OTP.

#3. Timely pension payouts

No doubt, Aadhaar Card is a boon for all senior citizens in India. If the Pensioners are duly registered under UIDAI and if their Aadhaar Card is linked to their bank accounts they need not undergo the cumbersome and tedious documentation process. They will consistently get timely disbursement of their pension.

#4. The prompt procedure of passport generation

How about getting your passport generated within a week’s time? This is surely possible if your Aadhaar Card is linked to your bank account. The Aadhaar Card serves as the proof of your identity as well as the address in this regard.

#5. Assistance in GST Registration

The Aadhaar number is one of the essentials for new GST registration online procedure. Iit's linked to the user’s bank account, it will validate the user's bank account proof.

#6. MSME Registration made easy!

Evidently, the relaxations for the small traders can be availed by them if they possess an MSME Registration certificate. To generate Udyog Aadhaar MSME certificate, the user’s Aadhaar number must be linked with his active mobile number for generation of OTP.

#7. Steady and direct disbursal of EPF

If the Aadhaar number is seeded into employee’s bank account, the amount of the Provident Fund will be directly disbursed to his account without any glitch.

#8. Subsidies on LPG and other government schemes

It is beyond any doubt that access to all the government schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and Pratyaksh Hanstantrit Labh (PAHAL) Scheme for LPG subsidy can be availed only if Aadhaar number is seeded into user’s active mobile number. Likewise, the benefit of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana can be accessed if the Aadhaar number is linked to the user’s bank account.

Why is there so much tumult over the Aadhar-Linking issue?

Indeed, there are endless avenues that can be accessed with a simple interlinking of the Aadhaar number with mobile and banking services. Yet, the proclamation of final due date for Aadhaar linking has become a thorny issue for the Supreme Court. It is claimed by some that liberal Aadhaar linking can pose challenges to confidentiality of user’s information and infringe his right to privacy.

Nevertheless, the aforementioned benefits are truly significant and can be easily accessed if the Aadhaar number is seeded into mobile and banking services.
